Gregorius or The Good Sinner is a Middle High German narrative poem by Hartmann von Aue. Written around 1190 in rhyming couplets, it tells the story of a child born of the incestuous union of a brother and sister, who is brought up in a monastery, ignorant of his origins. In adolescence he leaves the monastery to pursue a worldly life, and through his knightly prowess wins the hand of the mistress of a besieged city. However, before he can marry her, it is discovered that she is his mother, and Gregorius exiles himself to an isolated rock, where he remains for 17 years doing penance. On the death of the Pope, two cardinals are sent by God to seek out Gregorius as the next Pope.
