Perhaps from Thracian-Dacian *patis (“water”); compare Sanskrit पाथस् (pāthas, “water”). Both of these words could be related to Ancient Greek πόντος (póntos, “the sea”), in which case ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *póntoh₁s.
