Borrowed from Latin rēctus (“straight, upright”), clipping of mūsculus rēctus (“straight muscle”).
Perfect passive participle of regō (“to keep or lead straight, to guide”). Inherited from Proto-Italic *rektos, corresponding to Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵtós (“having moved in a straight line”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (“to straighten, direct”).
