Usually assumed to be connected with Albanian treg, Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tìrgus, Swedish torg (“market, marketplace”). Ultimately from an Illyrian substrate, derived from the hypothetical Illyrian *terg. Compare Albanian tregtar (“merchant”), Romanian târg (“market”).
