Borrowed from Hebrew יו״ד (yo"d, “name of the tenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet”), ultimately from Proto-Semitic *yad- (“hand”). That letter is used also in other Semitic alphabets; it represents the voiced palatal approximant /j/. Doublet of iota, jot, and yod.
yodh (plural yodhs)

Yodh (also spelled Yud or Yod or Jod or Jodh) is the tenth letter of many Semitic alphabets, including Phoenician, Aramaic, Hebrew Yud י, Syriac ܝ and Arabic Yāʾ ي (in abjadi order, 28th in modern order). Its sound value is /j/ in all languages for which it is used; in many languages, it also serves as a long vowel, representing /iː/.
