Borrowed from Ancient Greek κάρπασος (kárpasos, “cotton”), from Hebrew כַּרְפַּס (karpás, “fabric of cotton”), from Sanskrit कर्पास (karpāsa, “cotton”), though Mediterranean and Anatolic sources have also been suggested. The same Sanskrit word has resulted in gossypium (“cotton”).
