From Proto-Indo-European *kewp- (“a hollow”), perhaps of substrate origin. Cognate with 古期英語 hȳf (modern English hive), Sanskrit कूप (kūpa, “well, hollow, vat”), Ancient Greek κύπελλον (kúpellon, “beaker, goblet”).
