First attested in 1828, from Latin cȳmat(is) (“sprout, swelling, hollow sphere”) + -ic, stem of cȳma, from Ancient Greek κῡ́μᾰτος (kū́mătos, “wave, billow, swell, sprout, fetus”), genitive of κῦμα (kûma). Compare the latter cymatics (1966) and the earlier Latin cȳmaticus (1753).
