By surface analysis, domō (“to tame, conquer”) + -tor (“-er”). The term may be compared with Ancient Greek πανδάματωρ (pandámatōr, “all-conqueroring”), Sanskrit दमितृ (damitṛ́, “tamer”), and the Illyrian personal name Domator, which may suggest the existence of an agent noun *domh₂tōr, from the root *demh₂-. However, Beekes suggests that the Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin form may simply be independent innovations; he does not note the existence of the Illyrian name.
