From 中期英語 enselen, inselen, inseilen, from 古期英語 inseġlian (“to place a seal on”), from Proto-West Germanic *insigilōn (compare Old High German insigilōn, insigilen, Old Norse innsigla (“to seal”)), from Latin insigilāre; merged with and reinforced by Old French enseeler, from the same Latin source. Equivalent to en- + seal.
