Perhaps from Proto-Italic *houtis, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéw-tis ~ *ǵʰu-téy-s, from *ǵʰew-. Potentially cognate with Faliscan 𐌇𐌖𐌕𐌉(.)𐌉𐌋𐌏𐌌 (huti(.)ilom, “a small pitcher”). De Vaan, however, notes a slight semantic flaw with this etymology: The term is not an abstract noun. Within Latin, perhaps related to Latin fundō (“to pour out”) and fūtilis (“leaky; futile”).
