From Proto-West Germanic *gaup, from Proto-Germanic *gaupaz, related to Proto-Germanic *gaupnō- (“hollow (of the hand)”), probably related to *geupaną (“to be hollow”), from Pre-Germanic *geuppan-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰewb(ʰ)- (“to bend, stoop, move”) (Lithuanian gaubti (“to vault, cover”), Albanian gaboj).
