From Proto-Germanic *gaaunaz, literally “with a lamb”. There are no exact cognates, but the archaic sense of ġe- and the use of *aunaz (the original Proto-Germanic word for “lamb,” inherited from Proto-Indo-European and later displaced by *lambaz) show that this word was quite ancient.
