Borrowed from Ancient Greek *λιγνύζων (*lignúzōn) or *λιγνυΐζων (*lignuḯzōn), from λιγνύς (lignús, “soot; thick smoke”). Inflected like a Greek masculine present active participle, possibly of a verb formed with the suffix -ίζω (-ízō); compare ὑΐζω (huḯzō) from ὗς (hûs).
