Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-West Germanic *lusiu, from Proto-Germanic *lusiwaz. Alternatively, from Proto-West Germanic *lasiu, from Proto-Germanic *lasiwaz (“weak, unreliable, false”). Akin to 古期英語 lyswen (“corrupt, purulent”), 古期英語 lēas (“false, lax”), Old Norse lasinn (“limpy, weak”), las in lasmeyr (“wretched, frail”).
