Planetary boundaries is an Earth system framework put forth by a group of Earth system and environmental scientists led by Johan Rockström and Will Steffen from the Stockholm Resilience Centre. The group proposed a framework for planetary boundaries which can potentially identify, for governing and management agencies, a safe operating space within the boundaries. This is a precondition for sustainable development. The group identified nine earth system processes which have boundaries that, to the extent that they are not crossed, mark the safe zone for the planet. However, because of human activities some of these dangerous thresholds and possible tipping points have already been crossed, while others are in imminent danger of being crossed. The group published their full findings in a report in 2009. These findings were then presented to the Club of Rome General Assembly at Amsterdam, and an edited summary was published as the featured article in a special edition of Nature.
