1. A structure (enclosed or otherwise) for the hoisting equipment and landing platform at the top of a mineshaft.
   • 1894 May, M. C. Ihlseng, “From Mine to Mint”, in CAssier's Magazine, volume VI, number 31, page 9:

     The cage, which serves for both passenger and freight, rises to a level with the floor of the shafthouse, and is simply a platform of wood with uprights and framing of iron.
