sponge brush (plural sponge brushes)

1. (cosmetics) A grooming tool designed specifically for naturally dry and textured hair.
2. (photography, crafts) A sponge head attached to a handle, allowing for the smooth and even application of liquids.
   • 1853, Robert Hunt, A Manual of Photography, page 88:

     When dry, the paper must be pinned out on a board, and the silver solution spread over it, boldly but lightly, with a very soft sponge brush.

   • 1859, P. Bretonneau, Memoirs on Diphtheria, page 248:
