From Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃-, the root of sternō (“to spread, bestrew, scatter, fell”), with a *-g- extension. Cognate with Ancient Greek στόρνυμι (stórnumi, “scatter”), στρατός (stratós, “army, people, body of men”), 古期英語 strewian (English strew).
