No cognates exist in other Germanic languages: perhaps borrowed from Latin papyrus (via an unattested form *papur), which in later use also meant ‘candle-wick’ (compare Spanish pabilo (“candlewick”)). In early 中期英語 glossaries, Latin papyrus was glossed as taper. See also German Kerze (“candle”), ultimately from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs, “papyrus”).
