1. (rail transport) A section of cab added to the front of a steam locomotive tender, to provide protection for the engine crew in inclement weather when running tender-first.
   • 1940 November, “Notes and News: Locomotive Working at Abergavenny”, in Railway Magazine, page 616:

     But the 0-8-0 tender engines often run tender first, and No. 8932 has been fitted with a tender cab to give better protection to the enginemen when reverse running takes place.

   • 1947 March and April, “L.M.S.R. Locomotive Developments”, in Railway Magazine, page 66:

     In spite of their small size and low weight, many technical developments which have proved themselves in main-line service have been incorporated, and a novelty in the 2-6-0-type is a tender cab to improve the conditions of tender-first running.
