Of obscure origin; perhaps cognate with dread, from Middle English dreden, and earlier 古期英語 drǣdan (“to fear, caution against”). Alternatively, from a past form of thring (“to thrust; to crowd”), from Middle English thringen, and earlier 古期英語 þringan (“to press, squeeze, crowd”). Otherwise, from a mutated form of Irish athrú, athruithe (“changing”), though examples pre-date a significant Irish presence in Lancashire.
