From 中期英語 wrongous, for earlier wrongwis, wrangwis, from 古期英語 wrangwīs (“wrongous, rough, uneven”), equivalent to wrong +‎ -ous (see also wrongwise). Cognate with Swedish vrångvis (“wrong, iniquitous”). See wrong, and compare righteous.
