The 2010 Pacific hurricane season was the least active Pacific hurricane season, in terms of the number of named storms and hurricanes, on record, due to a moderate La Niña, unlike the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, which was one of the most active on record. It officially started on May 15, 2010 for the eastern Pacific, and June 1, 2010 for the central Pacific, and officially ended on November 30, 2010; however, the final storm of the season dissipated on September 23, nine weeks before the official end of the season. This marked a record early end to any season in this basin. These dates delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones tend to form in the basin. Prior to the formation of the first storm, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their official forecasts for the 2010 eastern and central Pacific hurricane seasons. Both areas were predicted to experience below-average activity due to two factors. The first was the effects of a Neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or La Niña and the second was the likely continuance of a lessened activity phase in the basin since 1995. Unlike the 2009 season, the first storm of the 2010 season, Agatha, formed during the month of May. It developed on May 29 near the coast of Guatemala. In the second week of June, a sudden spree of tropical cyclones developed, and between June 16 and 22, four cyclones formed, including the first two major hurricanes of the season, Celia and Darby. However, following the record active June, July saw no named storms, the first time this had occurred in the Eastern Pacific since 1966.
