Borrowed from Illyrian, from Proto-Indo-European *sil-ₑro-, suffixed zero-grade form of *seyl-, extension of *sey- (“to be damp, drip”), related to Old Saxon sioloth (“lake”), Old Irish silid (“he flows”).
