The so called Ulbricht group was a group of German communists, who were in exile in the Soviet Union from 1933 to 1945 due to the banning of the Communist Party of Germany and the mass persecution and the transportation to concentration camps and mass murder, of known communists and Socialists, by order of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers' Party during the Nazi era. It was named after the later Socialist Unity Party of Germany-chairman and chairman of the Council of State in the German Democratic Republic, Walter Ulbricht. Their function was, among other things, to prepare, translate and spread propaganda material, and, during World War II, to convince German prisoners of war in the Soviet Union of the errors of fascistic Nazism and as to the superiority of Communism and Stalinist orientated Marxism-Leninism. After the German Instrument of Surrender In April 1945 Ulbricht lead the group into Germany, making significant contributions to the rebuilding of the Soviet occupation zone along with and in conjunction with the soviet occupying authorities and made a significant contribution to the eastern zones' De-nazification, and it began the reconstruction of the German Communist party along orthodox Stalinist lines, eventually succeeding on the 21 April 1946 with the eastern members and the far left of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, led by Otto Grotewohl, and the eastern branch of the Communist Party of Germany, led by Wilhelm Pieck, agreeing to unite and form the Stalinist dominated Socialist Unity Party of Germany with most of the members of the Ulbricht group becoming members of the socialist unity party, and as members of the party, guiding the eventual transformation of the Soviet occupation zone into the Communist/Stalinist orientated German Democratic Republic with many former members of the group participating in leading roles in the governance of the state and in the party and in determining the party line in one form or another, such as Walter Ulbricht becoming General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany and Chairman of the Council of State of the German Democratic Republic and Otto Winzer becoming Foreign Minister of the German Democratic Republic.
