Zesto Drive-In restaurants was started by entrepreneur and inventor L.A.M. Phelan, of Broaster Company fame, as a national franchise chain with locations from coast to coast. The first Zesto in Evansville, IN, opened in 1949 on Franklin Street, the second in Evansville opened on Boonville Highway, and the third Zesto opened on Riverside. The chain was especially popular in big cities such as Atlanta, GA, Columbia, SC, Kansas City, KS, Louisville, KY, etc., but it was also a staple in many small towns, such as Greensboro and Concord, NC, and other communities in the south and midwest. Over time, the franchise vanished, leaving several Zesto Drive-Ins around the country, but now they are all locally owned and operated by different people. The franchise died young, but the name lives on.
