     The bailies then took the position of burghal officers, and were elected by the burgesses, but they still acted as officers of the crown in giving possession, or sasine as it was called, to the several burgh holdings, or borrowages as they were termed, whenever these were transferred to purchasers, or were transmitted to the heirs or successors of previous owners.
