1813, William Hollins, The British Standard of the Capital Letters Contained in the Roman Alphabet, Forming a Code of Rules for a Mathematical Construction and Accurate Formation of the Same, Birmingham: J. Taylor and Longman and Co., page 7:
-
These surriphs (which, as we apprehend, were not originally in use, but were added by the Greeks and Romans) consist of those straight lines with their adjoining curves, which have a tendency to render the letters more complete, and without which they would appear, to a modern eye at least, naked and ungraceful; but which, when properly joined, give them consequence and a dignified appearance. In some letters these surriphs are horizontal, as in B, I; in others they are perpendicular, as in C; and in others both, as in G.-How they fallin these respects, is obvious to an attentive eye, on perusal of the alphabet.
