「assert」は、自分の意見や主張を強く表現する際に用いられる。自信を持って、あるいは強制的に何かを主張するときに使われる。
one's right(自分の権利)、one's opinion(自分の意見)、authority(権威)などが「assert」によく伴う。
1. He asserted his innocence.(彼は自分の無実を断言した。)
2. She asserted her right to speak freely.(彼女は自由に話す権利を断言した。)
3. The company asserts that the safety of the product is guaranteed.(その会社は製品の安全性が保証されていると断言する。)
「declare」は、公式にまたは公然と何かを述べる際に使われる。法的な文脈や、公的な場での発表によく用いられる。
war(戦争)、independence(独立)、state of emergency(非常事態)などが「declare」によく伴う。
1. The government declared a state of emergency.(政府は非常事態を宣言した。)
2. He declared his love for her.(彼は彼女への愛を宣言した。)
3. The company declared bankruptcy.(その会社は破産を宣言した。)
「affirm」は、何かが真実であることを強く主張する際に使われる。特に、疑問や否定に対して真実を確認する意味合いで用いられる。
one's belief(自分の信念)、the truth(真実)、one's commitment(自分のコミットメント)などが「affirm」によく伴う。
1. She affirmed her commitment to the project.(彼女はそのプロジェクトへのコミットメントを断言した。)
2. The witness affirmed the truth of the statement.(証人はその声明の真実性を断言した。)
3. He affirmed that he had been at home at the time of the incident.(彼はその事件の時に自宅にいたと断言した。)
