In molecular biology, a GC box is a sequence of contiguous nucleotides: guanine (G), guanine, cytosine (C), and guanine, in that order, along a DNA strand. It is a basic transcription element (BTE) often found in the promoter region upstream from the transcription start site in the sequence of base pairs (bp) between genes. By convention, it is represented as 5’-GGCG-3’, but from the transcription direction (3’-5’) on the DNA strand being transcribed, 3’-GCGG-5’. It may occur upstream to the transcription start site in a region of 100-150 bp further upstream from the TATA box.
