From Latin Matthias.
Matthias
In several European languages, the equivalents of Matthias rather than Matthew are preferred as given names.
From the Koine Greek Ματθίας (Matthías), Μαθθίας (Maththías), contracted from Ματταθίας (Mattathías), from the Biblical Hebrew מַתִּתְיָהוּ (Mattiṯyā́hū, literally “gift of God”). Compare Matthaeus.
