In Inuit mythology, Nanook or Nanuq (Inuktitut syllabics: ᓇᓄᖅ), which is from the Inuit language for polar bear, was the master of bears, meaning he decided if hunters had followed all applicable taboos and if they deserved success in hunting bears.
