語源

By rhotacism from Proto-Italic *nomezos, from Proto-Indo-European *nem- (to assign, allot; take). Cognate with Ancient Greek νέμω (, to distribute), Gothic 𐌽𐌹𐌼𐌰𐌽 (niman, to take), Latvian ņemt (to take) and Old Irish nem (gift).

The grammatical sense is a semantic loan from Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós).
