Tagelied (plural Tagelieder)

1. (music, poetry, historical) A medieval German lyric genre, popular from the 13th to 16th centuries, focusing on the painful separation of lovers at dawn.
   • 1902, John George Robertson, Outlines of the History of German Literature, page 18:

     Kürenberg composed in a form of strophe similar to that of the Nibelungenlied, while Dietmar von Aist has given us the earliest German "Tagelied," that is to say, a poem analogous to the Provençal "alba" or French "aubade", in which two lovers are warned of the approach of dawn.

     But his instinct for the different shades of atmosphere, light, color, sound is infinitely finer. His Tagelieder are the most exquisite of their kind.
