From Proto-West Germanic *taswi. Further etymology unknown. Perhaps related to 古期英語 tǣsan (“to tear up, pull apart, tease”).
Alternatively, perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *tehsu, *tehswō n (“the right, right side”), related to Old High German zeso n (“the right, right side”), though the sense evolution is obscure.
