From Middle English beheten, bihaten, behoten (preterite behighte), from 古期英語 behātan (“to promise, vow, pledge oneself, threaten”) (preterite behēhte), corresponding to be- +‎ hight. Cognate with Scots beheit, behecht (“to promise, vow”), Middle High German beheizen (“to promise”).
