1. (Australia) A day on which money is raised for a group or cause by selling buttons for people to wear.
   • 1925, Report of the United States Coal Commission, page 104:

     A certain day each month is observed as button day. Buttons are supplied to the local unions by the district office, and there is a new button with a distinguishing mark or color for every month in the year.

   • 2018, Kate Ariotti, Captive Anzacs, page 101:

     In late November 1917, the editor of the Melbourne Argus was urged to spread the word about a possible 'button day' specifically aimed at prisoner-of-war relief: 'As an ardent supporter of the Button Fund collections I should like to urge the organisers . . . to arrange for a Prisoners' Day and that without delay . . . Can we not have a button day 'for all prisoners and captives'?
