Borrowed from Ancient Greek κάκκαβος (kákkabos), a loanword ultimately of Semitic or Pre-Greek origin. There is variation between -κκ- (-kk-) and -κ- (-k-) in Greek, but the spelling with -κκ- (-kk-) is preferred; there is likewise variation between -cc- and -c- in Latin.
