From 中期英語, borrowed from Latin Capricornus, from capra (“goat”) and cornū (“horn”), calque of Ancient Greek Αἰγοκέρως (Aigokérōs, “horned goat; name of constellation”), calque of Akkadian 𒀯𒋦𒈧𒄩 (suḫurmāšu), from Sumerian 𒀯𒋦𒈧𒄩 (SUḪUR.MAŠ, “the Goat-Fish; name of constellation”).

Capricornus is one of the constellations of the zodiac; it is often called Capricorn, especially when referring to the corresponding astrological sign. Its name is Latin for "horned male goat" or "goat horn", and it is commonly represented in the form of a sea-goat: a mythical creature that is half goat, half shark. Its symbol is
