From Proto-West Germanic *kamisi, from Latin camīsia, from Proto-West Germanic *hamiþi. Cognate with Old High German kemis (“tunic, skirt, dress”). Doublet of hemeþe.

• IPA: /ˈke.mes/
• Initial /k/ is supported by the descendant, Middle English kemes, and is expected based on the regular evolution of short *a to a back vowel *a/*o before nasal consonants: this did not trigger palatalization of a preceding velar consonant, even when later fronted to e by i-umlaut. Compare Old English cenep (< Proto-West Germanic *kanip; Middle English kempe) and Old English cemban (< Proto-West Germanic *kambijan; Middle English kemben). Campbell 1959 marks the word twice as "ċemes" and twice as "cemes" without discussing the value of the consonant. If not an error/typo, the use of the spelling ċemes by Campbell would represent a pronunciation starting with /t͡ʃ/.
