Within Italic, possibly related to śihitu, perhaps hinting at a Proto-Italic form *keng-. However, the further etymology of the term is uncertain. Connections with Proto-Indo-European *kenk-, Lithuanian kinkýti (“to bridle horses”), and Sanskrit कञ्च् (kañc, “to bind”), कञ्चुक (kañcuka, “armor”) have been proposed; however, these terms present phonetic problems regarding their cognacy.
