Unknown. Initial /dr/ does not occur in inherited Latin words that underwent regular development. Possibly onomatopoeic. If borrowed from a Celtic or Germanic language, could be from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer-, *dʰreh₁n- (“drone; to murmur”): initial *dʰ developed to /f/ in Latin, but to /d/ in those language groups. Compare English drone, dor and Ancient Greek θρῆνος (thrênos, “dirge, lament”).
