From Proto-Indo-European *bʰereg- (“to make a noise, growl, bark”) (with the diminutive suffix -illa), from *bʰer- (“to drone, hum, buzz”). Cognate with English bark, Latin frigūtiō (“to chirp”), Lithuanian burgė́ti (“to growl, grumble, grouch, quarrel”) and Serbo-Croatian brgljati (“to murmur”).
