From fūstis (“a club, cudgel”) + -igō (“act with, do something with”), the latter a suffixal form of agō (“to do, act”). The long -ī- can be explained as a retention of the i-stem + the initial vowel of -igō, cf. vectīgal, castīgō, and possibly fatīgō.
