De Vaan posits a preform Proto-Italic *glouβ(s)mā, from Proto-Indo-European *gl(e/o)wbʰ-m-eh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *glewbʰ-. Sihler suggests a development from Proto-Italic *glūmma, from earlier *glewbmā.
