From French hecto-, from Ancient Greek ἑκατόν (hekatón, “hundred”). Doublet of hecato- and centi-.
hecto-
Usually this prefix for "× 10" is intentionally not used in scientific contexts, in favor of either "× 10" or "× 10" instead. For example, "1 hm" (one hectometre) will usually be written instead as either "100 m" or "0.1 km". This fact is directly related to the preference for engineering notation as a subset of scientific notation that is especially useful mathematically. It favors groups of cubes (× 10).
