     Quōs pāgānī deōs asserunt, hominēs ōlim fuisse prōduntur, et prō ūniuscuiusque vītā vel meritīs colī apud suōs post mortem coepērunt, ut apud Aegyptum Īsis, apud Crētam Iovis, apud Maurōs Iuba, apud Latinōs Faunus, apud Rōmānōs Quirīnus.

     Those whom the pagans claim to be gods are said to have once been men, and, according to each one’s life or merits, they began to be worshipped among their own people after death: as in Egypt Isis, in Crete Jupiter, among the Moors Juba, among the Latins Faunus, and among the Romans Quirinus.

     Iovis fertur ā iuvandō dictus, et Iuppiter quasi iuvāns pater, hoc est, omnibus praestāns.

     Jove is said to have been named from “helping” (iuvando), and Jupiter as if meaning “helping father,” that is, one who provides for (or benefits) all.
