(historical, Ancient Greece) A veil or headscarf worn by women in antiquity, keeping together three items of ornamental hair binding: ampux (άμπυξ) (frontlet), kekruphalos (κεκρύφαλος) (snood) and anadesme (headband) (mentioned as early as in Iliad XXII 470, but also later, mainly in poetry, while the headscarf itself was called kalymna (κάλυμνα), kalyptre (καλύπτρη))[1][2]
  2. metaphorically, the edge, the top of city walls[3]
  3. similarly, the top covering of wine or storage vessel (Odyssey, 3.392)[3]
