By surface analysis, murcus (“shortened, mutilated”) + -idus. However, the form murcus may actually have been back-formed from this adjective. The semantic connection between the two words may relate to the supposed cowardice of individuals who mutilated themselves to avoid the draft.
First/second-declension adjective.
